I just finished making some enhancements to the blog. Is it just me, or can technology be alot of brain damage to marketers? I just want the stinkin' thing to work, I don't want to know how it works...
Here are a few of my enhancements:
- Added a Javascript Tag Cloud on the left (i'm proud of this)
- Updated my domain to get off the blogspot subdomain.
- Removed the blogger nav bar
Technical Brain Damage
I'm probably going to update my header when I have some time... This whole project has taken most of my evening, and it's really gotten me thinking... I wish I had my own personal techie dude that could just handle all this crap for me. Despite the fact that I can eventually figure this stuff out, I really don't enjoy the technology or coding side.
I'd rather just have someone else make it look good... I guess that's the inner marketer in me... I don't have time for all this technical brain damage.
It seems that you have to at least be comfortable around some basic HTML and applications to be successful these days. I know a few successful code jockeys that can throw down some decent marketing ideas, but is it necessary to function in both worlds? I guess I just don't like getting bogged down with all the details, seems like a roadblock.
The bottom line folks... When i'm spending time trouble shooting code... I'm not making any money... Now that just makes me sad. How bout you?

I volunteer to be your personal code jockey. Ping me next time. :)
As for being able to keep a foot in both the tech and business worlds, I'm convinced that having both skill sets is an extremely valuable combination.
I've seen too many projects and businesses get hosed because project managers and business owners only understood one or the other.
Just an observation.
That's great insight. Thanks for listening to my rant. I agree, I guess my frustrations come because I'm not strong on the code side and I know how much more efficent I could be with both skill sets. Thanks for your comment!
Carson - in today's marketing world, having a good grasp of technology is essential. Most of the successful marketers I deal with have a good technical background. They don't necessarily do the coding but understand why the technology enhancements are important and how they will add value. For example, a tip for your blog (which is excellent) would be to add a way to subscribe via RSS in the top left hand corner. This will make it easier for people to subscribe and lead to higher traffic to your blog. A marketer today should be able to grasp the importance of this concept in 1 second. If you get a blank stare and then a response "what is RSS?" then you have an issue. The question as to who should add the RSS registration is a good one. I think marketers with more technical skills are more marketable.

I think today, since tech is so important to so many marketing programs, it pays to understand how it works. That doesn't mean you need to be a code jockey, just understand what code jockeys need to be successful. And coders: you guys need to understand more about marketing. Technology can help you be a better marketer: of yourself or your company with a few tools. Try feedburner, and people can subscribe to your posts via RSS or email.
Chad & Jameane I completely agree. I love finding new cool technologies to implement. If you're always keeping an eye out, you will recognize these opportunities and figure out ways to put them into action. It's all about staying ahead of the curve.
Chad, the feedback on the RSS feed is great. I've been working on feedburner, I'll get something going this week.
Thanks again for the comments.
